GLOSSARY
Scope 1 & 2 emissions
Scope 1 covers direct emissions from fuel burned on-site — furnaces, boilers, company vehicles — while Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, or heat. Under the GHG Protocol, these are the two most basic emissions categories and represent the portion of a company's footprint it can most directly control.
Why it matters for Tier-2/3
When a customer requests emissions data from a supplier, Scope 1 and 2 are almost always checked first. Even a Tier-2/3 supplier with a small footprint can start accounting once fuel and electricity use are compiled, making this the practical first step in any climate response.
